Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT)

What is EPSDT?

Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) is a Medicaid benefit for children and teens under age 21. It makes sure children get the health care they need when they need it, whether it’s a routine checkup, a screening, or treatment for a health concern.

What services are included?

EPSDT covers routine and preventive care to help your child grow up healthy. This includes:

  • Well-child checkups and physical exams
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Dental checkups and cleanings (starting at age one)
  • Mental health care
  • Lab tests
  • Lead testing
  • Health education
  • Immunizations

Regular checkups help make sure children and teens are growing and developing well. They also allow your child’s doctor to catch any health concerns early and provide treatment.

If your child’s doctor decides they need special tests or treatment, even if Medicaid does not usually cover those services, they can still be covered if the care is considered medically necessary. For services not usually covered, your child’s doctor can request approval. Families in managed care plans should contact their plan directly for help.
